Wedding Vows Examples: 50 Real Vows for Every Style
I've read a lot of wedding vows out loud, and the best ones always sound like the person saying them, not a Pinterest quote. Below are 50 real wedding vows examples, traditional, modern, funny, and personal, plus a fill-in-the-blanks template you can finish in about an hour with a glass of wine and a Google Doc.

Traditional wedding vows
"I, [name], take you, [name], to be my lawfully wedded [spouse], to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part."
Modern personal vows (3 examples)
"I promise to keep choosing you. On easy mornings and hard Tuesdays. In the version of us that exists now and every version we grow into. You are my home."
"I promise to make you coffee before I make my own. To defend your terrible taste in movies. To be your safest place, and your loudest cheerleader, for the rest of my life."
"I don't know exactly what the next fifty years look like. I just know I want them with you, the ordinary parts, the impossible parts, all of it."
Funny vows that still hit
"I promise to always split the last slice of pizza fairly. I promise to fake enthusiasm for at least the first ten minutes of every one of your work stories. And I promise to love you even when you're right, which is often."
"I vow to never say 'I told you so' out loud. Silently, in my head, absolutely. But never out loud."
The fill-in-the-blanks vow template
Use this in a Google Doc, it takes about 45 minutes and always sounds like you.
- Open with a memory. "The first time I knew…"
- Say who they are to you. "You are the person who…"
- Make 3 promises. One serious, one specific, one that only makes sense to the two of you.
- Acknowledge the hard parts. "Even when…"
- Close with a commitment. "So today I promise…"
Frequently asked questions
- How long should wedding vows be?
- 1-2 minutes each is the sweet spot, roughly 150-300 words. Longer than 3 minutes and guests start shifting in their seats.
- Should couples write vows together or separately?
- Agree on tone, length, and whether you'll each make 3 promises. Then write privately and don't share until the ceremony.
- Is it OK to read vows from a card?
- Absolutely, most people do, and photographers love the shot. A small leather booklet looks more elegant than a folded piece of paper.
- Can we mix traditional and personal vows?
- Yes. Many couples say the traditional vows first (led by the officiant) and then read personal vows to each other.
